Seven Reasons to Buy New Hybrid Golf Clubs

If you have watched any golf on television recently, you’ve no doubt noticed that many of the pros are using hybrid clubs. That’s actually a little surprising, since hybrid golf clubs were originally conceived to help average golfers like you and me who have trouble hitting long irons. The fact that the professionals are adopting them tells me that these are the next big trend in golf.

If you don’t have any hybrids in your bag, here are seven compelling reasons to get some cusotm hybrid golf clubs in your bag as soon as possible.

  1. You can use a hybrid out of a fairway bunker. The long sand shot is one of the hardest of all shots for high handicappers. Often times you need distance, but it is unwieldy to hit a fairway wood out of the sand. I  know. I tried it with my new ft-i clone fairway woods. It didn’t work well. A hybrid is much easier to hit from the beach and will get you airborne with plenty of distance, even with the slower tempo needed in a fairway bunker shot. Play the ball in the back of your stance, don’t use much leg action, and hit the ball first with a shallow sweeping swing.
  2. You can go for it off the fairway when there is trouble in front. There is nothing worse than hitting a nice drive in the fairway only to realize that you have a long iron shot into the green but have to fly over a hazard – water or sand. You know that if you hit the long iron, it will get there but will be so hot it won’t stay. Hit your hybrid in this situation and you’ll be set. You get the same distance, but the ball will fly much higher and thus land more softly.
  3. You can use a hybrid off the tee. You’ve seen professionals hit long irons off the tee on tight holes for years, but it never made sense for most of us amateurs. Most of us mere mortals aren’t more accurate with long irons, and often time we lose a lot of distance with bad swings. There are usually several holes per round that have tight driving holes. Even with my high MOI clone driver that hits the ball straight as an arrow, I’m still wary of hitting it on one of these tight holes. Hybrid clubs give you the accuracy of irons with the confidence of getting the ball airborne off the tee. Tee the ball low and use a sweeping motion like a fairway wood.
  4. Use your hybrid as an escape club. Some of the original hybrid clubs were invented for this purpose. A hybrid is the perfect choice for punching out of a nasty lie in pine straw, bare earth or scruffy grass. Grip down on the shaft a couple inches and play the ball off your back foot. Make a three-quarter swing and keep your hands low through impact.
  5. Use your hybrid for chipping. You might recall Tiger Woods using his 3 wood for chipping just off the green several years ago. He doesn’t do that anymore, but the concept was actually a good one. The nice thing is that a hybrid club is far easier to use than a 3 wood. Obviously your wedges are the first choice when chipping, and if I want to put spin on the ball, that’s what I use. But when the sitauation calls for a bump and run rather than a spinner with my milled clone golf wedges, I prefer to use a hybrid rather than a mid-iron. It is more stable and I can give it a nice easy, fluid stroke without fear of chunking it. Choke down to the end of the grip and use a putting motion. The ball will come off quite hot, so you don’t need much of a swing. You will want to practice this shot before you use it in a round.
  6. You can hit your hybrid out of the rough. Even the best drivers on tour only hit the fairway 60%-80% of the time. That means you and I will probably be playing at least half of our second shots from the rough. One of the great things about a hybrid is that it is able to slash through thick rough and make contact with the ball with minimal club twisting. That means you will have a better chance to reach the green in regulation after a bad drive.  Play the ball slightly back in your stance and take a steeper swing than you would in the fairway. Be prepared for the ball to come out hot and run like crazy.
  7. You can use your hybrid to putt from the collar. Many golfers do not know what to do when their ball comes to rests against the collar of the green. Some pros use a sand wedge and try to blade the ball on the equator. It works great, but takes a lot of practice. A better solution is to use your hybrid. Take a longer backswing and slowly accelerate through the ball.

Hybrid clubs are a great addition to your golf club arsenal. I suggest you start out by replacing your 3 and 4 iron with equivalent hybrids. If you like what you see, you can even get an entire set of matched hybrid irons.

Most major brands now make hybrids to substitute for their long irons, but you will pay a huge price for their stock clubs. A better solution is to get custom fit golf clubs made specifically for you. Sounds more expensive, but it’s not when you get custom clone hybrids. In fact while you are at it, why not get fitted online for a complete set of custom clone irons.

Try the new hybrid golf clubs. I know you’ll like them.
