Pittsburgh Steelers Merchandise Cheers on a Solid Team

Football is a war. As the late comedian George Carlin has noted, the ruggedness of football is evident in its various elements. Those include the blitz, bomb, defensive line, gridiron, ground attack, shotgun, sudden-death overtime, and two-minute warning.

Football’s toughness is also evident in the length of an average career. In fact, the average NFL career is only about three years. While several factors influence this figure, its existence as a full-contact sport is a major factor.

BIRTH OF A TOUGH TEAM
Many of the names of NFL squads epitomize the toughness of the sport. There are the Raiders, the Titans, the Bears, the Cowboys, the Chiefs, the Rams, the Buccaneers, the Vikings, and the Lions. Then there are the Steelers. What distinguishes the Steelers’ name is that it centers on an object, rather than a person or animal: the sturdy metal known as steel. Here are some interesting facts about steel:

Coal is a significant substance in nearly 70% of the world’s steel production
The amount and distribution of carbon in steel influences the steel’s qualities
We can recycle 100% of steel
The U.S. is the third largest steel producer in the world (99M tons in 2006)
The U.S. is the third largest consumer of crude steel (113 M tons in 2005)

The “Steelers” on the team’s sports team merchandise is obviously based on what was once the city’s top industry. However, what are the roots of the team? Before they were the Steelers, they were the Pirates (a football team named after the Pittsburgh baseball team with the same name). The Pirates lost their first game 23-2, to the New York Giants. Unfortunately, their first season was as unsuccessful, and they finished with a 3-6-2 record. In 1940, Art Rooney Sr., owner of the Pirates, renamed his named the Steelers. This name honored the city’s primary industry at that time.

STEELERS IN THE SUPER BOWL
The Pittsburgh Steelers have played in six Super Bowls, winning five of them:

Super Bowl IX (1974)
This was the first Super Bowl appearance for the Steelers, and the third for the Vikings. The Steelers scored a safety by sacking Vikings Quarterback Fran Tarkenton. That gave them a 2-0 lead as both teams ran to the locker rooms, at halftime. The Steelers scored two TDs in the second half, thrilling their fans sporting nfl team merchandise. Meanwhile, the Vikings only recovered a fumble in the endzone. The Steelers’ defense was relentless, holding the Vikings’ total rushing to just 17 yards.
FINAL SCORE: STEELERS 16, VIKINGS 6

Super Bowl X (1975)
Both teams scored a touchdown in the first half. The Cowboys also tacked on a field goal, taking a 10-7 halftime lead. After missing two field goals, the Steelers scored a safety after blocking a punt of the Cowboys. They then added two field goals. After both squads scored a field goal, the Cowboys earned a final chance to win the game. However, the Steelers intercepted Roger Staubach, sealing their victory.
FINAL SCORE: STEELERS 21, COWBOYS 17

Super Bowl XIII (1978)
The first half included a flurry of scoring. Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers QB, passed for three TDs. Meanwhile, Dallas scored on two big plays. One was a 39-yard pass from Roger Staubach to Tony Hill. The defense also scored after Mike Hegman stripped the ball from Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw, and ran the ball 37 yard for a TD. At halftime, Steelers led 21-14.

The Steelers took a commanding 35-17 lead in the second half, pleasing their fans sporting pittsburgh steelers merchandise. Pittsburg scored two TDs in 19 seconds (one after a Cowboys fumble). The Cowboys answered with two TDs, the second after recovering an onside kick. However, with 17 seconds left in the game, the Cowboys failed to scoop up their second onside kick.

Super Bowl XIV (1979)
The score in the first half went back and forth between the Steelers and Rams. Just before halftime, the Rams scored two field goals to capture the game’s momentum and a 13-10. The teams traded TDs in the second half. However, then the Steelers retook the lead when the Steelers’ QB Terry Bradshaw connected on a lengthy TD pass. This put the Steelers up 24-19. The Rams later marched to the Steelers’ 32-yardline. But then the Steelers picked off the Rams’ QB, Vince Ferragamo. They then scored the final TD of the game.
FINAL SCORE: STEELERS 31, RAMS: 19

Super Bowl XXX (1995)
The Dallas Cowboys took an early 13-0 lead against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the Steelers scored a TD before halftime, cutting the Cowboys’ lead to 13-7 at the intermission. The Steelers scored 10 points in the second half, and racked up 201 total yards to the Cowboys’ 61. However, the Steelers’ QB, Neil O’Donnell, threw three costly interceptions in the third quarter. This disappointed Steelers fans listening to the game in vehicles with pittsburgh steelers car accessories. Cowboys’ Cornerback Larry Brown picked off two of the interceptions, leading to 14 Cowboys points.

Super Bowl XL (2005)
While the Steelers (11-5) played a solid game, the Seahawks (13-3) made several errors. That included dropped balls, penalties, and bad management of the game clock. Though the Seahawks scored first, the Steelers battled back with a touchdown, taking a 7-3 halftime lead.

The second half was virtually as close as the first half. The Steelers’ Running Back Willie Parker set a Super Bowl record, with his 75-yard TD rush. Then the Seahawks answered with a touchdown of their own. However, a play that took them to the Steelers’ 1-yardline was called back, and the Steelers then intercepted the Seahawks’ quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck. The Steelers would seal the game with a 43-yard strike from Antwaan Randle El to Hines Ward, on a fake reverse play.
FINAL SCORE: STEELERS 21, SEAHAWKS 10
