Bodybuilding Supplements with Digestive Enzymes
What every one should know about bodybuilding supplements is that proper digestion should be given as much importance as the diet itself. Proper digestion is the key to effective absorption of nutrients on which a lot of our body’s functions, at cellular level, is greatly dependent. For the bodybuilder, this could mean improved results and more energy, among other things. An important ingredient of some bodybuilding products are digestive enzymes, which aid in breaking down our food into the most basic components that our cells can metabolize.
Digestive enzymes are in fact proteins that are naturally secreted by various glands in the body to make digestion possible. Even as we chew our food, enzymes in our saliva help disintegrate and prepare it for further digestion in the stomach and small intestines, where more glands also release enzymes. The pancreas and the liver are other organs that produce digestive enzymes.
These enzymes act as catalysts for the biochemical reactions that transform food components into essential nutrients needed by the body. In general, there are three types of digestive enzymes: amylases, lipases and proteases. Enzymes classified as amylases are responsible for transforming carbohydrates into simple sugars. Lipases are responsible for breaking down fat. Proteases break down protein into fundamental amino acids. Without enough enzymes to aid digestion, our absorption of nutrients will also be poor.
It is a common case in us adults that our glands are not secreting nearly enough digestive enzymes to meet our food intake. Enzyme production is usually affected by factors such as aging, environment and lifestyle. The quantity and quality of the food we eat affect our digestion as well.
Nature provides us with sustenance that go very well with our digestive process, specifically fresh food already containing these necessary enzymes. Fresh produce, especially fruits and vegetables, are high in digestive enzymes and are ideal natural supplements for our digestion requirements. However, not all people consume the right amounts of these foods on a regular basis. Worse, the average diet includes more foods that are highly processed and cooked in high heat, which destroys enzymes.
This is why digestive enzymes are made available in the form of health supplements. Bodybuilders, weightlifters, athletes, and any other fitness buffs would particularly benefit from enzyme supplementation because of their special needs. Bodybuilders, for instance, consume a lot more protein than the average person and would therefore have an increased need for digestive enzymes. The enzymes would in fact facilitate and boost muscle development because the nutrients are optimized.
Another fact is that bodybuilders have a higher tendency to lose digestive enzymes because of frequent and intense exercise. Exercise increases the body’s temperature and, as previously mentioned, heat is destructive to enzymes. An addition with bodybuilding supplements is therefore necessary in order not to overwork the glands and organs tasked to secrete digestive enzymes. Trying too hard to make up for the shortage of these enzymes could cause these organs to fail in the long run. Generally, better digestion and absorption of nutrients, made possible by digestive enzymes, can have positive effects on the body’s overall health.
